Situated on 380 acres of coastal farmland near Campbell River, Shelter Point Distillery exemplifies a harmonious blend of traditional craftsmanship and the unique terroir of Vancouver Island. Established in 2011 by Patrick Evans, a third-generation farmer, the distillery was envisioned as a field-to-flask operation, utilizing estate-grown barley and pure aquifer water to produce premium single malt whiskies.
The distillery employs traditional Scottish methods, including slow fermentation and double distillation in copper pot stills crafted by Forsyths of Scotland. This meticulous process results in a spirit that captures the essence of its coastal environment, with maturation warehouses located just yards from the ocean, allowing the sea air to influence the whisky’s character.
Shelter Point’s core expressions include the Classic Single Malt, known for its balanced notes of fruit, caramel, and a hint of seaside brine, and the Montfort series, which highlights the distinct micro-regions of their barley fields, offering unique flavour profiles in each release. The distillery has also gained recognition for its innovative Smoke Point whisky, aged in barrels smoked with local driftwood, imparting a distinctive smoky character reminiscent of island campfires.
In 2023, Shelter Point achieved a milestone by becoming the first Canadian distillery to have its whisky selected by the Scotch Malt Whisky Society, marking its emergence on the global whisky stage. With a commitment to sustainability and a deep respect for its natural surroundings, Shelter Point continues to craft whiskies that are both reflective of their origin and celebrated worldwide.
