From The Official Website

Unusually delicate, yet unmistakably Ardbeg. Released over 25 years ago in 1997, 17 Years Old was one of the first bottles to leave the Distillery after reopening. Unusually delicate, yet unmistakably Ardbeg, this whisky found a place in the hearts of the Committee, and set an extraordinary standard for our future.

Retired in 2004, Ardbeggians thought that was the last they’d see it. But, while times have been moving quietly on, its return has been years in the making. Dr Bill Lumsden has meticulously crafted this release to mirror the original, retracing the flavour profile note by note, and choosing to bottle at 40% strength, just as it was back then.

Nose Fresh and clean, with hints of pine resin, aniseed, sea spray and lavender soap- very gentle, very restrained, and rather elegant for an Ardbeg. With water, there is a distinctive, flinty minerality, along with subtle hints of sweet peat smoke, malted barley, and a touch of toasting bread.

Palate A beautiful, creamy texture is followed by a lovely combination of flavours, with aniseed toffee, café latte, fennel and gentle antiseptic soap. The peat smoke is present, but in a very restrained manner, and leads into a lingering aftertaste with chewy oak, cocoa powder and tar.

Finish The peat smoke is present, but in a very restrained manner, and leads into a lingering aftertaste with chewy oak, cocoa powder and tar.

Ardbeg

Perched perilously close to the sea spray and pebbled shores of Islay’s southern coast, Ardbeg is something of a cult in the world of peated malt. Its fans, often fiercely loyal and inexplicably fond of green branding, revere it not merely for its formidable smoke, but for the sense of wild irreverence it brings to tradition.

Founded in 1815, Ardbeg’s journey has been anything but smooth sailing. It has weathered closures, ownership changes, and one particularly barren spell in the 1980s that nearly saw its kiln flames extinguished for good. Thankfully, Glenmorangie swooped in during the late 1990s with a rescue plan and a marketing flair, and the distillery has since become a global symbol of Islay’s smoky charms.

Its production is delightfully hands-on - old-style wooden washbacks, a relatively short fermentation, and stills with a quirky purifier on the spirit still that tempers the wilder elements. The resulting whisky is gloriously medicinal, with briny lashings of seaweed and peat smoke, yet balanced by an unexpected fruitiness that peeks through the fog.

Despite a relatively modest capacity, Ardbeg punches above its weight in both presence and potency. While its neighbours wear their history with solemnity, Ardbeg seems to dance in a lab coat and goggles, madly experimenting and somehow always landing on its feet.
