Tucked away in the salt-scrubbed town of Campbeltown, once the pulsing heart of Scotland’s whisky trade, Glen Scotia is one of the few noble survivors of a bygone age. The town itself, once boasting over thirty distilleries, now holds a mere trio—Glen Scotia chief among them, carrying forth the flame with stoic grace.
Established in 1832, the distillery has seen more chapters than a Victorian novel. Wars, depressions, and a collapse in Campbeltown’s whisky reputation all conspired to fell lesser institutions, but Glen Scotia endured, evolving from family ownership to corporate stewardship and back again, never quite losing its singular charm.
Its spirit, both literal and metaphorical, is defined by a distinctive Campbeltown character—briny, robust, and just a touch mysterious. While Glen Scotia’s wares once leaned heavily on the smoky, industrial styles of yesteryear, today they offer a more refined palette: gentle maritime notes laced with dried fruit, vanilla, and occasional wafts of peat. Production is traditional, almost defiantly so—open-top fermenters, direct-fired stills in decades past, and a warehouse system that allows the sea air to play its subtle part.
Modern expressions such as the Victoriana and the 15 Year Old speak volumes about Glen Scotia’s balancing act between heritage and innovation. Each bottle seems to whisper tales of Atlantic mists and weather-beaten stone. This is whisky that remembers where it came from—and isn't afraid to let you taste the journey.
