Tucked beside the River Livet in the heart of Speyside, Tamnavulin operates quietly, its low-slung buildings often overlooked by those chasing more famous names nearby. Yet behind its modest exterior lies a distillery with a distinct purpose, designed from the outset to serve the blending industry with consistency and scale.
Founded in 1966 during the post-war whisky boom, Tamnavulin was built by Invergordon Distillers to meet the surging demand for malt whisky in blends. Its name, drawn from the Gaelic for "mill on the hill," reflects the site's history as a former carding mill, though the machinery inside now serves a very different craft. Ownership has shifted over the decades, passing to Whyte & Mackay, where it remains today within the wider Emperador portfolio.
Tamnavulin’s production is geared toward efficiency and gentle character. The distillery employs large, modern washbacks and slender stills that encourage a light, approachable spirit. Fermentations are relatively short, resulting in a soft, malty profile with notes of apples, pears, and subtle vanilla sweetness. Most of its output still disappears into blends, but in recent years Tamnavulin has stepped more confidently into the single malt spotlight.
Its single malt range showcases careful cask management, often employing American oak with a variety of wine or sherry cask finishes to add layers of fruit and spice. While it may not boast centuries of heritage or a cult following, Tamnavulin offers a quietly reliable Speyside experience, approachable for newcomers yet nuanced enough to reward exploration.
