Captain William Fraser was not, by most accounts, an especially cuddly figure. A former soldier who had served in India, he returned to his native Nairnshire and established Brackla distillery in the early nineteenth century, stubbornly persevering while illicit distillers made rather better business of things around him. His persistence paid off spectacularly. In 1833, King William IV granted Brackla the first Royal Warrant awarded to a Scotch whisky distillery, allowing Fraser to add the rather useful word โRoyalโ to the name.
Royal Brackla sits on the Cawdor Estate, a few miles south of Nairn, in countryside more readily associated with castles, forests, and Shakespearean murder than industrial-scale whisky making. Water comes from the Cursack Springs, while the distillery itself has grown considerably from Fraserโs operation. After periods of expansion, closure from 1985 to 1991, and various changes of ownership, it became part of Bacardiโs John Dewar & Sons portfolio in the late 1990s.
For all that regal history, the spirit itself is rather graceful. Long fermentation encourages fruity esters, while tall stills, upward-angled lyne arms, and plentiful reflux create extensive copper contact. The result is a clean, fragrant make, with orchard fruit, grass, and a bright acidity rather than great weight or smoke. That freshness is particularly useful when Royal Brackla meets sherry wood, which has become central to its modern single malt identity. Oloroso, Palo Cortado, and Pedro Ximรฉnez casks can bring considerable richness, but beneath the dried fruit and spice there remains something distinctly Brackla: elegant, perfumed, and considerably less bombastic than its royal title might suggest.
