From The Official Website

A belter from the North British distillery! This single grain Scotch was distilled in 1988 and spent a mighty 38 years maturing in a single refill barrel. Layered with notes of maple, almond, and waffle, it makes a marvellous addition to our exclusive Master of Malt collection, with a total outturn of 276 bottles.

Nose: Warm waffles, drizzled with maple syrup. Dense and sweet. Toffee, chocolate caramels, toasted nuts, a touch of polished oak.
Palate: Slick layers of golden syrup and pancake batter cushion a flash of ginger heat, followed by waves of runny caramel, peanut butter cups, and dark chocolate truffles.
Finish: Waves of cacao and almond linger, warming spice fades, leaving supple brown sugar sweetness, crumbly tablet, browned butter, and a smidge of lingering ginger.

North British

Founded in the closing years of the nineteenth century, North British was born not from a romantic dream of a Highland glen but from the resolutely practical minds of Edinburgh’s whisky merchants. In 1885, a consortium led by Andrew Usher and William Sanderson decided that the capital needed a steady, independent supply of grain spirit to feed the booming blends of the day. Thus the North British Distilling Company was created, a formidable counterweight to the monopoly of Distillers Company Limited. Its history is therefore entwined with questions of power, competition, and the city’s role in shaping modern Scotch.

The site chosen lay in the west of Edinburgh, at Gorgie, where railway lines and the Union Canal provided ample access for coal, grain, and casks. Even now, visitors to Murrayfield Stadium might catch a faint whiff of sweet mash on the breeze. Though utilitarian in appearance, the distillery remains one of the largest in Scotland, a quiet workhorse whose output sustains innumerable blends. Ownership today is shared between Diageo and Edrington, a neat reminder that yesterday’s rivals can become today’s partners.

Production at North British is unashamedly industrial. Maize, imported in staggering quantities, forms the backbone of its mash bill, though wheat is also employed. Continuous Coffey stills, humming day and night, turn out vast rivers of spirit. Much of it disappears into the shadows of blend, yet those who seek out independent bottlings will find a whisky that can be surprisingly elegant: light in body, with vanilla, honeyed sweetness, and a gentle grassy note, all softened by years in American oak. It is a reminder that even the great blending distilleries can, on occasion, step out from behind the curtain and take a bow.

Proudly Bottled By Master of Malt

Long before Master of Malt became one of the internet's most recognisable whisky retailers, it was a rather more modest operation, sending bottles to enthusiasts through the decidedly analogue medium of mail order. Founded in Tunbridge Wells in 1985, the business began life as an independent bottler, with printed catalogues, handwritten orders, and the occasional cheque arriving through the post.

The arrival of Justin Petszaft, a theoretical physics student with a talent for computers, helped transform the business. Having developed its first website around the turn of the millennium, Petszaft oversaw a remarkable expansion into online retail, distribution, and spirits production. The growing enterprise eventually became part of Atom Group, whose portfolio also includes That Boutique-y Whisky Company. Following an acquisition by brewing giant AB InBev in 2018, the business returned to Petszaft's ownership in 2024.

Overseeing its whisky selections is Sam Simmons, better known to some as Dr Whisky. A former Balvenie global ambassador, whisky writer, and veteran of The Scotch Malt Whisky Society, Simmons joined Atom Brands as Head of Whisky in 2018. His influence can be seen in a bottling philosophy that values character and individuality over fashionable names or impressive age statements.

The company's fortieth anniversary in 2025 heralded a renewed independent bottling range, featuring carefully selected single casks and small batches, presented without chill filtration or added colouring. These releases offer fresh perspectives on familiar distilleries, often at refreshingly approachable prices.

From handwritten orders to a formidable digital enterprise, Master of Malt has evolved considerably, although its original fascination with discovering exceptional whisky remains reassuringly intact.
